Xian, China

Project Type: Feasibility Study
Size : 700,000 square feet
Date: 2009

At the end of July 2009 we travelled to China in a joint venture with B Squared Architecture Inc. The sprawling project is well under construction and the client hired us to provide fresh design concepts for an increasingly savvy residential market. We developed three types of floor plans for two of the typical units. Material choices were stone, tile, wood and carpeted surfaces. A special emphasis was put on a keyed legend to finishes, fixtures and lighting to bridge language gaps.

Whistler House

Project Type:
Zoning:
Size:
Completion: In Progress

This is Measured Architecture’s first major project in Whistler, BC, a community known as a mecca for outdoor recreation. The project exists within a Whistler vernacular strongly linked to winter and heavy snow loads. This house seeks to mediate all four seasons equally, while honouring and furthering the mountain chalet typology. Because of the incredible natural surroundings, a strong connection to landscape easily became central to all design decisions. The house is sited such that it emerges directly from the rocky hillside at the back of the property. The exterior cladding materials are intended to blur the relationship between built and natural environments in order to create a structure that is of the mountain.

Shaughnessy House II

Project Type: Renovation + Addition
Zoning:
Size:
Completion: In Progress

Shaughnessy House II, a single-family house, necessitated finesse in fitting a contemporary design into a traditional setting, with both conditions coexisting within the same structure. The existing home, a grand Edwardian-era Foursquare house built in 1910, is in keeping with the Garden City suburb concept on which Shaughnessy was originally designed. Here Measured employs a broad scope that combines the standard restoration arsenal of cleaning up, making good and enabling works, with a few key contemporary interventions that draw the building up into the present. Measured has set a small glass cupola along the roofline on the front façade. Inspired by the traditional widow’s walk typical to homes of this style, the cupola serves as a foreshadowing to the significant contemporary envelope insertion at the rear of the home. Removing a second level rear dormer allowed Measured to create a glass lantern wall that runs through all levels and unifies the rear façade. The precise distinction of these contemporary elements serves to highlight the defining characteristics found within the original home.

Cliff House

Project Type : Unbuilt
Zoning : RS-2
Size : 5,500 Square feet
Completion: 2014

Mounting concern over how today’s decisions will impact future generations informs a move toward projects that are truly restorative of their environments. Cliff House, a waterfront house currently in design development, provides the opportunity to address a significant foreshore erosion caused by tidal action on the site. Under consultation with Fisheries and Oceans, the design includes a plan for intertidal habitat regeneration. The landscape drops off dramatically to the ocean giving the project it’s name and it’s push off point for the design process. The landscape acts as a remediation tool running up from the intertidal zone, underneath the house, and out to the street through a gradient of indigenous biozones.

The main building form cantilevers over a swimming pool. The design engages children by overlaying the main circulation paths with a lost and found line of playful alleys - for example chalk boards running up stairs and armature for climbing are appliqueed over and under the “grown-up” spaces.

The Training of Architects
by James Culham
for Measured Architecture

Exploring back alleys and train tracks, a child may wonder where does this lead to? How long can I follow? What will I encounter along the way? What will encourage me to carry on, or will I be inclined to stop, or even to turn back out of fear or preference for places more familiar.

These experiences and spaces provide a rich metaphor for a life exploring new homes, new possibilities and new uses. Are these "lost spaces" or are they yet to be discovered? Dare we dream of a role for ourselves as discoverers? Are these alleys and train tracks part of our collective past or our unimagined future?

This is an exploration, both personal and professional, of the merits and risks of mobility. Pride of discovery tempered by nagging sense of loss. Have I found my home, or was home where I began my journey?

Are the tracks relics of an outdated technology or are they a lifeline to a sustainable future? Can they be reimagined and reinvigorated by new uses which are not possible to build permanently? A performing arts centre for temporary events, a farmers market merging transport and retailing, an abbatoir providing services to remote areas only required seasonally.

This is also an exploration of architects and architecture, where intransigence and pretentions of permanence evident in both can be coaxed into imagining new futures and new possibilities if they can learn to travel lightly on the land.

A train can be joined, adapted to new uses and moved from place to place with relative ease. People can also be joined, take on new purpose, and move with ease if inclined to do so.

The train and its tracks are a fertile analogy for our lives and our positions. Where we find ourselves neither on the right nor wrong side of the tracks, but on track to our home, however impermanent.

The intention here is to introduce a scheme of simultaneous use along Vancouver's rail lines. With a clear intent to leave the right-of-way unobstructed and open for reuse, this project proposes to facilitate the continuation of the existing use of the line, and redefine underutilized zones adjacent to this once vital transportation artery with travelling performance spaces.

Courtyard House

Project Type: Unbuilt
Zoning: RS-1
Size: 4,500 SF
Completion: In Progress

The governing programmatic requirement from the clients for this single family residence was to provide a sanctum from the gaze of the city. Through the introduction of an offset courtyard opening into the rear yard and bound by the front and side conditions, controlled views of the world beyond the site are filtered through the mass and screening of the form. The resulting U-shaped building facilitates requested unobstructed views of all quadrants within house and out to landscape from critical station points such as kitchen. This proposal interrogates how a home can maintain the duality of privacy to the street while maintaining an absolute porosity to the site within.

Grafted House

Project Type : Renovation + Landscape Design
Zoning : RS-1
Size : 1,500 square feet
Completion: 2011

When we were approached with this renovation project, the client’s initial wish was to replace the look of their North Vancouver Special with a “Tudor” style face lift. Through conversations with the client about the value of their home, we came to the conclusion that the inherent integrity of their existing house was an important part of the West Coast vernacular. We chose to use a light trellis system to graft a new entry onto the existing façade thus updating and extending the entrance without denying the original structure in order to celebrate the existing qualities of the house.

Renovated House

Project Type : Renovation
Zoning : RS-5
Size : 6,000 sq ft
Completed : 2009

In Renovated House, completed in 2009, Measured took an inventory of the extensive renovations undertaken in the decades since the home was built in 1940. The house had become disjointed after so many incoherent modifications that it read as a palimpsest of changing fashions but Measured was able to look beyond appearances and see potential in the underlying structure. Stripping back the layers revealed a West Coast gem primed for the kind of minimal design interventions that work best as a backdrop for individual signatures. Design that allows for the eclectic contingencies of everyday life has a greater chance of lasting through multiple owners and hopefully staying out of the landfill.

Cloister House

Project Type : Deconstruction + New Build
Zoning : RS-1
Size : 2,500 SF + 700 SF laneway.
Completion: In Progress

Measured consistently addresses the issue of discarding usable building materials, most notably in their current project under construction, Cloister House. The existing 1940s home was in poor shape and contained a large amount of asbestos but rather than embark on a conventional demolition and new build, Measured worked with the City of Vancouver and Pacific Community Resources on a pilot program to sustainably deconstruct the house for salvage, recycling or reuse. The project has exceeded the program goal to send less than 10% of the home to the dump. “Salvaging, recycling and reusing home materials through deconstruction will help us meet 2020 zero waste targets,” said Gregor Robertson in an interview at site. In order to make deconstruction viable from a cost perspective, Pacific Labor provided 20 officially described “inner city youth at risk” as part of its job training initiatives. Measured focused on the creation of a highly durable and easily maintained structure that can age and patina gracefully, believing that eliminating the need to demolish due to decay is a step in the right direction. Measured used the stringent 15 kWh/m² annual energy consumption outlined in Canadian Passive House guidelines as a benchmark in the evaluation of the performance of the house.
