This is Measured Architecture’s first major project in Whistler, BC, a community known as a mecca for outdoor recreation. The project exists within a Whistler vernacular strongly linked to winter and heavy snow loads. This house seeks to mediate all four seasons equally, while honouring and furthering the mountain chalet typology. Because of the incredible natural surroundings, a strong connection to landscape easily became central to all design decisions. The house is sited such that it emerges directly from the rocky hillside at the back of the property. The exterior cladding materials are intended to blur the relationship between built and natural environments in order to create a structure that is of the mountain.

Cliff House

Project Type : New Build
Zoning : RS-2
Size : 5,500 Square feet
Completion: 2014

The Cliff house is sited on the waterfront in Vancouver BC. The landscape drops off dramatically to the ocean giving the project it’s name and it’s push off point for the design process. Tidal action is erroding the foreshore of the site giving us an opportunity to work with Fisheries and Oceans to create a design that includes a plan for intertidal habitat regeneration. The landscape will act as a remediation tool running up from the intertidal zone under the house and right out to the street tying the project front to back with a gradient of indigenous biozones. The main building form cantilevers over a swimming pool. The design engages children by overlaying the main circulation paths with a lost and found line of playful alleys - for example chalk boards running up stairs and armature for climbing are appliqueed over and under the “grown-up” spaces.

The Training of Architects

Exploring back alleys and train tracks, a child may wonder where does this lead to? How long can I follow? What will I encounter along the way? What will encourage me to carry on, or will I be inclined to stop, or even to turn back out of fear or preference for places more familiar.

These experiences and spaces provide a rich metaphor for a life exploring new homes, new possibilities and new uses. Are these "lost spaces" or are they yet to be discovered? Dare we dream of a role for ourselves as discoverers? Are these alleys and train tracks part of our collective past or our unimagined future?

This is an exploration, both personal and professional, of the merits and risks of mobility. Pride of discovery tempered by nagging sense of loss. Have I found my home, or was home where I began my journey?

Are the tracks relics of an outdated technology or are they a lifeline to a sustainable future? Can they be reimagined and reinvigorated by new uses which are not possible to build permanently? A performing arts centre for temporary events, a farmers market merging transport and retailing, an abbatoir providing services to remote areas only required seasonally.

This is also an exploration of architects and architecture, where intransigence and pretentions of permanence evident in both can be coaxed into imagining new futures and new possibilities if they can learn to travel lightly on the land.

A train can be joined, adapted to new uses and moved from place to place with relative ease. People can also be joined, take on new purpose, and move with ease if inclined to do so.

The train and its tracks are a fertile analogy for our lives and our positions. Where we find ourselves neither on the right nor wrong side of the tracks, but on track to our home, however impermanent.

The intention here is to introduce a scheme of simultaneous use along Vancouver's rail lines. With a clear intent to leave the right-of-way unobstructed and open for reuse, this project proposes to facilitate the continuation of the existing use of the line, and redefine underutilized zones adjacent to this once vital transportation artery with travelling performance spaces.

Courtyard House

Project Type : New Build
Zoning : RS-1
Size : 4,500 SF
Completion: In Progress

The governing programmatic requirement from the clients for this single family residence was to provide a sanctum from the gaze of the city. Through the introduction of an offset courtyard opening into the rear yard and bound by the front and side conditions, controlled views of the world beyond the site are filtered through the mass and screening of the form. The resulting U-shaped building facilitates requested unobstructed views of all quadrants within house and out to landscape from critical station points such as kitchen. This proposal interrogates how a home can maintain the duality of privacy to the street while maintaining an absolute porosity to the site within.

Grafted House

Project Type : Renovation + Landscape Design
Zoning : RS-1
Size : 1,500 square feet
Completion: 2011

When we were approached with this renovation project, the client’s initial wish was to replace the look of their North Vancouver Special with a “Tudor” style face lift. Through conversations with the client about the value of their home, we came to the conclusion that the inherent integrity of their existing house was an important part of the West Coast vernacular. We chose to use a light trellis system to graft a new entry onto the existing façade thus updating and extending the entrance without denying the original structure in order to celebrate the existing qualities of the house.

Renovated House
Project Type : Renovation
Zoning : RS-5
Size : 6,000 sq ft
Completed : 2009

The original home was built in 1940 and had gone through several renovations over the years, most extensively in the 1980’s. When the client approached us, the house had become disjointed after so many changes. We were able to look beyond the appearance in order to really diagnose the bones of the place. By stripping the house right down to the structure a West Coast gem was revealed. In order for this project to have longevity, and not be just another renovation project on a house that had become a palimpsest of changing fashions, we chose to create a minimalist space that works as a backdrop for individual signatures. In this way the home has a greater chance of lasting into the future, and hopefully staying out of the landfill.

Project Type : Deconstruction + New Build
Zoning : RS-1
Size : 2,500 SF + 700 SF laneway.
Completion: In Progress

Central to all desires for this single-family 2,000 square foot butterfly roof residence with laneway was the need to create a place of refuge in the city. Focus is on the creation of a highly durable and easily maintained structure that can age and patina gracefully. The cottage in the city is an all-concrete construction complete with a concrete rainscreen veneer. The project has solar hot water collection and PV cells to meet 10% energy consumption load accompanied with green roofs on the remainder. Measured is working with the City of Vancouver + Pacific Community Resources Society to sustainably deconstruct the existing home rather than demolition it and send it to landfill. The program’s goal, which provided Pacific Labor with 20 officially described “inner city youth at risk” to handle the crowbars and learn a thing or two about working for a living, is to send less than 10% of the home to the dump. “Salvaging, recycling and reusing home materials through deconstruction will help us meet 2020 zero waste targets,” said Gregor Robertson in an interview at site.
